So you have decided to use a removal company, smart choice. You have your date and time booked for your removal company to meet you on the day of the move, but there is still plenty for you to do. Here are some tips for you to make sure that you are fully prepared for when your removal company arrive, any delays can have a knock on effect and should be avoided.

You will want to make sure that all boxes are secured, anything fragile should be clearly marked and all boxes should be numbered corresponding to which ever room they are intended for, e.g. Bedroom 1/Bedroom 2.

Unless agreed beforehand with the removal company, you should dismantle any furniture that is too large to be removed from the property such as a dining table, large wardrobes, extra-large sofas etc. If you have an agreement with the removal company that they will dismantle then you can leave it for them to do, just make sure that they also reassemble it once you arrive at your new home.

It is always a good idea to dismantle flat pack furniture unless it is stable, well put together and small enough to removal from the house. Flat pack furniture is not generally designed to be dismantled and rebuilt so take extra care not to cause any damage that may prevent it going back together in one piece.

Make sure that you disconnect your washing machine, and defrost your fridge-freezer. It’s always a good idea to get a large enough cooler with some ice packs to keep your food cool until it’s safe to turn your fridge-freezer back on in your new home. Alternatively if you have a frost free freezer then you could bag your frozen foods and place them back in the freezer, this means that when it comes to moving it, the food can simply be removed and replaced back inside once it is loaded inside the removals vehicle.

If you have a cooker then make sure you get the required professional to disconnect it for you and to reconnect it in your new home, most removal men will not touch a cooker if it is still connected as you have to have a certificate to show that you are qualified to disconnect/reconnect them.

If you have sky in your home then make sure you tell them in advance on your move date so that they can arrange an engineer to fit a new dish (if required) at your new property.
